Time is a great asset. Remember a magic bank account story (read more)? Imagine that there is a magic account that is filled every morning and emptied every night. Then you wake up!
The lightning-speed of technological progress over the past 10 years was designed make our lives easier. And in some ways it has: it has given us the possibility to stay in touch with friends, even if they live a 1000 miles away. It even gives us the ability to instantly find information on any subject, and grocery shop by clicking a button.
But for some reason, people have started to express that social networking is eating up precious time.
“Procrastination” is a reaction commonly used these days when it comes to social networking.
So, the question is: How can social networking be used to our advantage?
First, here’s a set of rules to flip-flop the procrastination trap into an investment:
Rule #1 Are you a creator or a user?
Every minute you network, ask yourself if you are creating content or consuming it. I suggest that 75% of your networking-time consist of creating content and 25% on inspiration.
Rule #2. Read email and answer! Read subjects, not the news!
James Althucher, one of many original-thinking individuals, claims that he does not read the news…and now I see why. Why would he spend valuable time reading the news? If something significant happens, he will hear about it one way or another.
But he does answer his emails AND TALK to his readers. Interacting socially gives him constructive feedback, which ultimately helps him improve his product and service.
Rule #3. You are what you post.
Basically, anybody can be anybody on the Internet—and people who you don’t interact with regularly will judge you based on timelines, pictures and posts. To them, you are what you post. So, before posting, ask yourself: why am I posting this?
Remember, when you’re posting, you’re branding yourself—so brand yourself as an intelligent business person with class.
Keep in mind that when you promote your business, you also promote yourself.
There are a lot of people who build their business via social networks. And for those people, their investment is equal to the time spent on networking.
For every minute spent creating new content on social networks, brings the possibility of new clients. So, “time” really is money. And it’s also a great asset!
Are you are a creator or a user?
Too bad, your 25% inspiration time is up! Now go back to work NOW!
