HOW MUCH DOES A TRIATHLON COST? PART II: BIKING

Once upon a time 365 million years ago, the early Tetrapod (Ichthyostega), a fishlike amphibian,  a meter-long creature that had the limbs and skull of an amphibian, crawled out to the groud from the water – evolution captured in transition.

I think about evolution every time I crawl out of the water after swimming part of triathlons. My legs and hands don’t listen to my brain. I literally need to voice commands like

“Take off goggles!”

“Take off cap!”

“Unzip wetsuit then run!”

It is better to train before as many times as possible.

Speaking of transitions, imagine a triathlete transitioning from one part of the race to the biking part of the race. It’s a crucial section of a triathlon that requires a small investment.

Biking is the most expensive part of a triathlon costs. And yes, it can be done with a single- speed or even the same bike that takes you to the grocery store and back—but most guys cannot resist the temptation of buying a brand new one for competing

Bikes are like cars: the faster they are, the more money they cost.

It is, however, possible to buy an aluminum Roaster for under $500 (on sale) in the off-season, like October – November. I bought my 2012 Wilier Montegrappa under that price, but upgrading key parts hiked it up to $500 anyway.

More than 35 percent of U.S. triathletes spend $3000-$4000 on bikes alone.

Don’t forget about biking shoes. They run from $50 up to $600. Sunglasses are recommended as well.

Also, a helmet is a must. Without it, you will not be allowed on the track.

Prices for helmets vary and range from $30 to $400, but all serve the same purpose—to protect your head. The difference is in aero efficiency. The same principle applies when choosing a bike. For example, if you are a seasoned triathlete maximizing your mind and body potential, than an expensive bike and aerodynamic helmet could help minimize time on the track. Otherwise, for most of us, going all-out is excessive and costly.

There are also biking pre-costs like cycle training at the gym, training camps, biking instructors and bike rollers for home-training.

Here’s a list of necessities you need for triathlon biking

Bike

Pedals and clips

Biking shoes (better buy 2 pairs at once)

Biking instructor

Helmet

Sun glasses

Triathlon shorts or a biking/running wear gear (with cushion)

Total budget: $500 (minimum), $3000-$4000 (medium) and $4000-infinate (max)

Good luck!
